Adven acquires Ekokem’s heat plant in Jepua, Finland

Adven and Ekokem have agreed on an asset deal, whereby Adven acquires Ekokem’s Jepua heating plant and its operations.

Ekokem’s heating plant in Jepua and its operations will be acquired by Adven. The acquisition is part of Adven’s growth strategy which aims at a significant growth in the industrial energy markets in the near future. The plant produces about 50 GWh of energy annually, which equals the energy consumption of a small town’s district heating network.

- Smaller scale decentralized energy facilities are outside Ekokem’s stategy and therefore it is natural for us to sell the Jepua plant, says Vice President Business Unit Recycling and Energy Tero Holländer at Ekokem.

Along with the acquisition, two employees will transfer with the business to Adven, and the company’s presence in the Pohjanmaa district will now be even more prominent.

Plant produces energy for Mirka

Adven’s newly acquired plant supplies energy for abrasives manufacturer Mirka. Adven already owns the energy facility that produces reserve and peak energy for Mirka, and which was converted from the use of heavy fuel oil to biogas during the summer.

By-products of Mirka and other industrial companies in the area are used as the fuel at the Jepua heating plant. By-products are converted to recycled fuel and further used in the state-of-the-art technology combustion plant. In the future, Adven will be in full responsibility of the operations at the Jepua plant. This includes use of the by-products, supply of industrial steam for Mirka, in addition to the energy production of the reserve plant.

- Our target is to continuously improve and develop our energy production and versatile know-how in the field. We are very pleased that by acquiring the Jepua plant we can further broaden our cooperation with Mirka. For us it is essential to produce heating, cooling and steam energy for our customers cost-efficiently, reliably and sustainably, says Senior Vice President New Sales and Delivery, Ilkka Niiranen from Adven.

- For us at Ekokem it was important that the heating plant we built in Jepua gets a new reliable and competent owner, that ensures the continuation of operations. The plant is in excellent shape and Adven can now develop its operations further together with Mirka, comments Holländer.

- Reliability of energy supply is critical for us and we are pleased that Adven will be the new owner of the heat plant. Based on our long-term partnership we believe this will further improve our opportunities to develop our operations in Jepua, says Stefan Sjöberg Chief Executive Officer of Mirka.

The transaction between Adven and Ekokem is expected to be finalized during October at the latest.
